A Century of Counsel in Springfield, Massachusetts

In 1924, Attorney James F. Egan opened his law practice in downtown Springfield’s Court Square Building, a short walk from the Old First Church where Daniel Webster once spoke and John Brown once worshiped.

What began as a single practitioner serving individuals and families in the greater Springfield area grew, on the strength of Mr. Egan’s reputation, into one of Western Massachusetts’s most respected law firms. For over 100 years, the Firm has grown alongside the city and region it calls home. As Springfield developed into a regional hub of commerce, banking, healthcare, and industry, Egan, Flanagan and Cohen grew with it, expanding from a single lawyer’s office into a full-service firm now based at 67 Market Street in downtown Springfield.

The Firm’s client relationships reflect its longevity. Egan, Flanagan and Cohen serves as counsel or general counsel to a range of long-standing regional institutions, including hospitals and health systems, religious and nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and area banks. At the same time, the Firm has never lost sight of the individual clients and families who were its first clients in 1924, representing them, and often their children and grandchildren, through estate planning, real estate transactions, and the full range of legal matters that arise across a lifetime and across generations of a family business.

Egan, Flanagan and Cohen is not simply located in Western Massachusetts, our people are of Western Massachusetts. Our attorneys and employees live in the region’s cities and towns, send their children to local schools, and are raising the next generation of Springfield-area families, just as generations of attorneys at the Firm have done before them.

That commitment extends well beyond the office. Our attorneys serve on the boards of local nonprofits and charitable organizations, sit on bar association committees, hold elected and appointed positions in local government, coach youth sports, and give their time to churches, charities and community organizations throughout the region.

We believe that this kind of local investment makes us better lawyers. Understanding a community’s institutions, its businesses, and its people firsthand, because we live among them, is part of what has allowed Egan, Flanagan and Cohen to serve Western Massachusetts families and businesses, generation after generation, for over a century.
